WFP Chief Condemns Gaza Hunger, Pledges Protection for Aid Workers
Speaking at a news conference at United Nations headquarters in New York, Lindberg highlighted the severe humanitarian needs in Gaza and identified funding reductions as a major obstacle to the organization’s operations.
Asked how he would respond to reports of Israeli troops firing on WFP convoys, particularly given his connections to the White House, Lindberg said the safety of humanitarian personnel was "the number one concern for me."
"I will absolutely stand up for our employees, no matter where on Earth they are located," he said.
He further pledged to intervene wherever humanitarian workers face violence, emphasizing that protecting them and their families would remain a priority.
"if anywhere in the world there are people attacking humanitarians, I will absolutely do what I can to protect them from violence against them and their families."
Lindberg outlined staff protection and empowerment as his foremost priorities, noting that humanitarian workers have faced unprecedented levels of deadly violence worldwide over the past two years.
"First and foremost, it is protecting and empowering our staff members. Humanitarians have been killed all over the world in the past two years, at unprecedented levels, and it’s unacceptable."
"Over 700 people in the last few years have been killed trying to save other people’s lives, and nobody should lose their life trying to save somebody else," he added.
