Germany Condemns Attacks on European Diplomats in West Bank
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Kathrin Deschauer addressed the matter during a press briefing in Berlin, stressing that attacks against diplomatic personnel and journalists warranted condemnation.
“I think, as a matter of principle, we must of course say that attacks on diplomats – and this also applies to a journalist – should, of course, be criticized. These are troubling reports from the weekend,” she said.
“We join in the (European) demands that there must be an investigation,” she added, expressing “solidarity” with the European diplomats who were targeted.
The incident took place over the weekend near Taybeh, east of Ramallah, where a European Union delegation was visiting the area during the olive harvest. The group included the French and Belgian consuls, a Polish representative and officials from the Catholic Church.
During the encounter, masked Israeli settlers reportedly confronted members of the delegation, while a window of a Belgian consular vehicle was smashed.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over attacks by violent Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their property across the occupied West Bank. Such incidents have reportedly increased since the olive harvest season began earlier this month.
