Netanyahu Threatens New Gaza Actions as Herzog Warns Of Divisions

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday indicated that further targeted killings could take place in Gaza, while President Isaac Herzog cautioned that divisions within Israeli society are intensifying ahead of the upcoming election.

“We still have tasks ahead of us, and we are determined to complete them,” Netanyahu said during a ceremony at Mount Herzl cemetery in west Jerusalem, marking three years since the beginning of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Netanyahu also said Hamas would not be permitted to retain control over the Gaza Strip.

Since the conflict began, Israeli military operations have killed hundreds of Hamas figures both inside the occupied Palestinian territories and abroad, with civilians also reported to have been killed during some of those operations.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 175,000 others, according to Palestinian figures. The offensive has also caused extensive destruction, with around 90% of the territory’s infrastructure reportedly damaged or destroyed.

Netanyahu has led Israel’s government since late 2022, with his administration widely characterized as the country’s most right-wing government to date. He is also facing a domestic corruption trial that could result in a prison sentence if he is convicted.

Herzog, meanwhile, warned that political and social divisions among Israelis were becoming more pronounced as the country approaches its Oct. 27 legislative election.
