25 Boats Defy G7 Summit in Lake Geneva Gaza Protest

(MENAFN) A flotilla of 25 vessels converged on Lake Geneva Saturday in a symbolic act of defiance against the G7 summit being held across the water in the French city of Evian, drawing roughly 100 activists from 15 nations, a Swiss newspaper reported.

The boats anchored in the heart of the lake, positioning themselves directly opposite Evian, where leaders of the world's seven largest economies had gathered for the weekend summit.

Organizers described the demonstration as entirely non-violent. According to a statement from Global Sumud Switzerland, which backed the action, participants were united by two driving grievances: Switzerland's stance on Gaza and its role in the security apparatus erected around the summit.

The protest drew seasoned activists. Several participants had previously joined flotilla missions attempting to reach Gaza by sea, lending the demonstration a pointed historical resonance.

Among those on the water was Swiss Green Party lawmaker Leonore Porchet, who did not mince words in condemning the assembled world powers. "The countries of the G7 and Switzerland are complicit in the genocide taking place in Gaza," she said.

Also taking part was former Geneva Mayor Remy Pagani, a veteran of Gaza-bound maritime activism who was previously detained by Israel during one such mission.

The flotilla protest unfolded as G7 leaders convened inside Evian to address the world's most pressing geopolitical and economic challenges — though for those on the lake Saturday, the crisis in Gaza demanded equal urgency.
