UN Urges Protection of Gaza Flotilla Activists After Interception

(MENAFN) The United Nations has called for all individuals aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla to be kept safe and treated peacefully after Israeli forces intercepted the mission in international waters and detained dozens of activists, according to reports.

UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said the organization wants to ensure that those on board are not harmed and that the situation is handled calmly.

“We want to make sure that all the people on the flotilla are not harmed. We want to make sure that this is handled in a peaceful manner,” he told reporters.

He also said the UN’s longstanding concerns about such maritime interceptions remain unchanged and apply to the latest incident as well.

According to reports, Israeli forces boarded the Global Sumud flotilla earlier on Monday in international waters, detaining around 100 activists as the vessels were en route toward Gaza.

The flotilla, which included more than 50 boats, had departed from Marmaris on Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast and was carrying 426 participants from dozens of countries, including Turkish nationals and activists from the US, Germany, France, the UK, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, and New Zealand.

The mission had previously been targeted off the coast of Crete on April 29, according to reports.

The flotilla aimed to challenge the Israeli blockade on Gaza, which has been in place since 2007.
