US Envoy Criticizes UN Budget Growth Without Gains in Global Peace
During remarks at a Senate session on Wednesday, he stated that UN funding has “quadrupled in terms of assessed and voluntary giving over the last 25 years,” but contended that this increase has not been matched by better outcomes.
“Yet we have not seen a quadrupling of peace,” he said, adding that “wars rage” and “dictatorships are honored” within UN human rights agencies, without elaborating.
Waltz further argued that the organization has strayed from its core mission. “Instead of focusing on the basics, instead of focusing on peace and security, frankly, the UN has drifted,” Waltz said.
He also highlighted what he described as an expanding administrative system paired with weakening results, stating: “The bureaucracy has grown, and the results have lagged.”
His comments come at a time when the UN is dealing with financial challenges, as officials caution about possible budget shortfalls and call on member nations to settle their contributions.
According to reports, the United States makes up the largest share of outstanding payments.
As a permanent member of the Security Council, Washington has repeatedly exercised its veto authority, including in backing Israel—an approach that is widely viewed as contributing to stalemates in efforts to resolve the war in Gaza and other regional disputes.
