Canada, EU vow stronger cooperation, back Ukraine, Gaza peace efforts
The statement followed the fourth Canada-EU Joint Ministerial Committee meeting, co-chaired by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, which took place in Niagara on Tuesday.
Both sides praised progress under the new Canada-EU Security and Defense Partnership and the Strategic Partnership of the Future, describing their collaboration as a “cornerstone of stability, resilience and prosperity across the Atlantic.”
Reiterating “unwavering support” for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the EU and Canada called on Russia to end its “war of aggression” and to adhere to international humanitarian law. “There is no path to peace without Ukraine,” the declaration stated, underscoring the need for a comprehensive and lasting peace grounded in the UN Charter and international law.
The two partners also agreed to continue aligning sanctions against Russia and its allies and to maintain both financial and military assistance for Kyiv.
Regarding the Middle East, they welcomed the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, praised US-led diplomatic efforts and regional mediators, and commended the release of hostages. They urged all parties to fully implement the agreement, ensuring “immediate, unimpeded” humanitarian aid access, while reaffirming support for Palestinian Authority reforms and its return to Gaza governance.
The discussions also covered expanding cooperation in defense, energy, and digital innovation.
Canada and the EU agreed to work toward a new Digital Trade Agreement to complement the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and enhance collaboration in clean energy, critical raw materials, and industrial supply chains.
Both sides pledged to strengthen coordination in maritime security, cyber defense, and countering hybrid threats “in complementarity with NATO.”
The declaration concluded with a shared commitment to “further strengthen their robust and enduring partnership.”
