Erdogan, Starmer discuss Gaza situation, local, global issues

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that a lasting peace in Gaza can only be achieved through a two-state solution, urging stronger international efforts toward that goal during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The discussion took place on the sidelines of an international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, focused on the Gaza peace plan, where Erdogan also met with several other world leaders.

According to reports, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments. Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye has been actively working to end Israeli attacks on Gaza and secure a ceasefire, stressing that efforts to make the truce permanent and build the foundation for peace will continue to intensify.

Erdogan also highlighted the importance of ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza and launching reconstruction efforts without delay. He said Türkiye and the UK are working to expand cooperation across various sectors, including defense.

In a separate meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Erdogan discussed bilateral ties and the situation in Gaza. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between their countries and sustaining humanitarian support for Gaza. Erdogan underscored that maintaining the ceasefire and rebuilding the enclave are essential steps toward ending the humanitarian crisis, once again emphasizing that a two-state solution remains key to lasting peace.

Erdogan also held talks with the UAE’s Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, where they discussed growing bilateral relations and regional developments. Erdogan noted that stronger political ties between Türkiye and the UAE have helped expand trade and investment cooperation and said both nations aim to deepen collaboration in sectors such as defense.

Speaking on Gaza, Erdogan said Türkiye continues to work to end what he described as genocide in the enclave and that a new opportunity for enduring peace has begun to emerge—one that must not be wasted. He called for full implementation of the ceasefire, uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian assistance, and the immediate start of Gaza’s reconstruction.

The release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails began on Monday after Hamas freed all 20 living Israeli captives held in Gaza under the terms of last week’s ceasefire deal.

Erdogan also held closed-door meetings with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during the summit.
