Biden, Clinton praise Trump’s efforts in Gaza peace agreement

(MENAFN) Former US presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden have publicly commended President Donald Trump for his involvement in brokering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.

“I’m grateful that a ceasefire has taken hold, that the last 20 living hostages have been freed, and that desperately needed aid has begun to flow into Gaza,” Clinton said in a statement on Monday. He added, “President Trump and his administration, Qatar, and other regional actors deserve great credit for keeping everyone engaged until the agreement was reached.”

Clinton called on both Israel and Hamas to build on the fragile truce, urging them to “try to turn this fragile moment into lasting peace that provides for the dignity and security of both Palestinians and Israelis.”

Biden also expressed appreciation for Trump’s role in securing the release of the hostages. “I commend President Trump and his team for their work to get a renewed ceasefire deal over the finish line,” he wrote on X, adding that he hopes the agreement will endure and deliver “equal measures of peace, dignity, and safety” for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The ceasefire agreement was signed on Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye. Under the deal’s first phase, Israel withdrew troops from parts of Gaza, while Hamas released the final 20 hostages in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Trump said that “everybody’s happy” with the deal, adding that it “has taken off like a rocket ship.” He expressed confidence that the conflict, which erupted in October 2023, is over. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump, calling him the “greatest friend” Israel has ever had.

However, questions remain about full implementation. Israel has not committed to a complete withdrawal from Gaza, and Hamas has refused to disarm. A previous ceasefire reached in January collapsed after just two months.
